Jerome Vaughn retires from WDET

13 August 2026 at 18:41

Jerome Vaughn will tell you it all started with a Panasonic ball-and-chain radio gifted to him by his mother. He was hooked on the voices and foley art that created clear pictures in his mind, all through sound alone.

”I was one of those kids who slept with a radio on my nightstand. And even now, I’m one of those people, if I’m driving around late at night, I’m flipping around on the AM radio to see what station I can get from how far away.”

Now, Jerome looks back on a celebrated career in radio news on the brink of retirement. He’s spent 34 years at WDET, where he got to tell the real stories of his hometown. During his time at the station, he’s been an intern, an underwriter, a producer, a reporter, senior news editor, assistant news director…

And he’s spent over 20 years as WDET’s news director.

“WDET is really a special place,” said Jerome. “And Detroit is my favorite place on the face of the Earth.”

Detroit born and raised, Jerome has always held his hometown close. He recalls how media once depicted only the worst of Detroit—sometimes fabricating things altogether to push the narrative of it being a dangerous place, beyond redemption. He worked to set the record straight.

While he covered insightful stories about the metro Detroit region, he worked to make sure that people of color had a voice in news. As a part of that mission, he founded WDET’s Detroit Evening Report Program that tells news for and by people of color.

His dedication to ethical, accurate reporting has earned him many recognitions over the years, including awards from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters, Michigan Associated Press, and Society of Professional Journalists. In 2018, he was inducted into the Michigan Journalism Hall of Fame.

Jerome is also a passionate mentor for WDET interns and beyond. He’s helped kickstart many careers in broadcast, and is always ready to help more young journalists build the skills and networks needed to enter the field.

“I knew that I wasn’t gonna be here, working at WDET in my 90s. I want to make sure that there’s quality public radio being created, you know, so that I can enjoy it after I’ve retired,” Jerome said with a wry smile.

“Jerome’s impact on WDET is deep and lasting. Futhermore, the whole Detroit journalism industry owes a lot to this man, who lives and breathes news. WDET will do its best to continue along the path Jerome helped set while missing his wisdom and humor,” said General Manager Mary Zatina.

Jerome’s final broadcast on WDET will be Monday, Aug. 17 for All Things Considered – Detroit, from 3-7 p.m.

A lasting legacy

At a retirement celebration on Aug. 14, Jerome was surprised with the creation of a permanent internship in his name, honoring his decades of mentorship and the many WDET interns he has helped launch into their careers. The Jerome Vaughn Internship was made possible through gifts from generous WDET donors and members of the newsroom.

Tune in to The Metro during the 10 a.m. hour on Monday, Aug. 17 for radio send-off of our favorite news director.
In The Groove will be spinning JV’s favorites at 2 p.m.
I always enjoyed listening to Jerome's reports throughout the years, and he has even been an influence for me as a reporter for a newspaper up in Romeo. He will be greatly missed. All the best to Jerome Vaughn on his retirement!!

Thank you, thank you and one more thank you. As a high school social studies teacher, I appreciate your dedication to objective worthwhile reporting. The WDET news department was invaluable to me as I led students in discussions about the days events. You will be missed but go out and enjoy life. All the best to you and your family.

"Jerome, you are and have been a voice of a generation whom grew up listening to the radio as one of the many media avenues for understanding and appreciating the community and culture that is Detroit... It has been a pleasure to know you, pitch stories to you, and watch our kids play soccer together. I know this is not a goodbye, but only a transition to your next endeavors. I wish you good luck and God’s continued blessings on you and your family. “Hello you are listening to WDET 101.9 FM, I am Jerome Vaughn!”

What a pleasure it has been to be a listening partner with you at WDET-fm. Thank you for all that you have done for all of us in Detroit. The reach of the station is amazing right along with your presence. I wish you well in retirement. You may be leaving the station but I'm sure your voice will pop up some where. By the way, Source Booksellers began it's journey in 1989 as yours began around the same time. The bookstore became my retirement life. I wish you my kind of joy in your retirement.

Congratulations! to a newsman who did not labor to make himself the star of the story, but earned the respect and trust of this community by his professional focus and even-handed reporting. I was introduced to Jerome Vaughn by my friend Nkenge a couple of decades ago, and have been listening ever since. “All the best!” as Jerome moves on from his tenure at WDET.

I’ve had the privilege of knowing Jerome Vaughn since our days in high school. When I moved back to the Detroit area in 1989, I couldn’t have been happier when I heard my friend on the radio. He’s become a voice for honest and ethical journalism, and outstanding servant to his audience, and a true man for others, raising his family and sharing his gifts with the community. While I will miss hearing him, I’ll always be grateful that he chose this career And this radio station to serve our community. Now I hope you’ll have time for lunch one of these days, Jerome.

Jerome, long ago, when I was teaching at Wayne State, you were kind enough to take a moment to jump-start my car in the parking lot for WDET and my apartment. Thanks again!
