The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services said the number of people with confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis has climbed to more than 8,000 as of Friday morning.

MDHHS reports the total as of July 24 at 8,176. That's up from 7,664 reported on Thursday, and 6,148 confirmed cases on Monday.

MDHHS also reported that 160 people have been hospitalized with symptoms from cyclosporiasis as of July 23.

The Howell Nature Center has launched a 10-day emergency fundraiser to help secure "critical" money to operate and take in wildlife rehabilitation patients.

The fundraising campaign started Thursday morning, with a goal of raising $100,000.

The Howell Nature Center says it temporarily stopped taking in new wildlife rehabilitation patients as they work to stabilize operations. They will continue to care for animals already at the center.

We will continue providing exceptional care to the hundreds of animals already in our care, but without immediate support, many injured and orphaned animals that would normally receive a second chance simply won't have one, the Howell Nature Center said in a Facebook post.

After a financially strenuous year in 2024, the Howell Nature Center raised about $140,000. In 2024, they closed programs and let staff members go. At the beginning of 2025, those donations helped restore programs.

Because the center is a nonprofit, they do not receive financial aid from the local, state or federal level. Their biggest source of revenue is school field trips, however donations are how they get by.

Police are investigating an act of vandalism at the University of Michigan Golf Course that appears to have targeted the greens.

In a statement Friday, an official for the University of Michigan Division of Public Safety and Security said that an act of vandalism did occur, but they aren't sharing more details because it's an open investigation.

Photos from the course show the collar of some greens and areas around the collar browned out.

In a letter from the golf course to their subscribers on Thursday, officials at U-M Golf Course said that over the past few days, they ahve seen a highly unusual decline in the coloring of the putting surfaces.

"Our grounds team is actively monitoring the situation and developing an action plan for moving forward," the email reads. "At this time, we suspect that foul play may be involved, and we are working closely with our partners at the Department of Public Safety (DPSS) to complete a full investigation."

The golf course is ranked among the best public courses in Michigan, and officially opened in 1931. It's designed by legendary architect Alister MacKenzie, who also designed Augusta National Golf Club.

The Midwest cyclosporiasis outbreak has been linked to shredded iceberg lettuce served at Taco Bell locations in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia.

That's according to an ABC News source familiar with the investigation.

The news comes as the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services said the number of people with confirmed cases of cyclosporiasis jumped to 4,312 as of Thursday morning.

That's up by 1,003 cases from Tuesday, July 14, and more than four times the amount of reported cases since last week.

MDHHS also reported that 102 people have been hospitalized with symptoms from cyclosporiasis.

As extreme heat moves into the area this week, all Detroit recreation centers and Detroit Public Library locations will serve as cooling centers.

The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat watch for Monday and a Heat Advisory for Tuesday, when heat index values of up to 103 are expected, according to NWS.

City officials are encouraging residents to plan ahead for periods of extreme heat.

Extreme heat can affect everyone, especially older adults, young children, people with chronic health conditions, people who work outdoors, and residents without reliable access to air conditioning, the city said in a press release.

The city shared the following tips for beating the heat:

Drink water frequently, even if you are not thirsty

Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, and light-colored clothing

Spend time in air-conditioned spaces such as libraries, recreation centers, or malls

Limit time outdoors, especially during the hottest parts of the day

Store medications properly according to storage instructions

The city also shared ways for kids and teens with asthma to stay safe:

Stay hydrated

Watch for worsening symptoms, including shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing, or unusual fatigue

Check air quality conditions before outdoor activities

Follow your asthma action plan and keep medications accessible as directed by your healthcare provider

Public health is about taking action before a crisis occurs, said Ali Abazeed, the Detorit Health Departments chief public health officer and director. With extreme heat expected, we want Detroiters to have the information and resources they need to protect themselves and their families. Simple actions like staying hydrated, limiting time outdoors, and checking on neighbors can help prevent heat-related illness and keep our community safe.

The number of cyclosporiasis cases in Michigan has jumped to more than 2,600 since June 22, according to the latest information from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

According to the MDHHS, there are 2,640 cases as of Monday, July 13, at 9:30 a.m. That's up from 1,562 cases on July 10, 1,251 on July 9 and 992 on July 8.

The MDHHS reports 44 hospitalizations to date.

The Centers for Disease Control is also tracking cyclosporiasis cases, but acknowledged last week that their data is behind the states. They say they have received 843 confirmed domestic cases since May 1, with another 1,500 cases that require further analysis to confirm the illness as domestically acquired cyclosporiasis. They also say multiple states have reported an increase in cases in the last two weeks compared to the same period in 2025. For Michigan, they are reporting 161 to 300 cases, while also acknowledging their numbers are lagging.

The CDC says that as of July 9, 31 states are reporting cases, with 86 cases requiring hospitalization. The CDC is reporting the outbreak as beginning May 1. According to the CDC, sick people ranged in age from 5 to 88 years, with a median age of 44, and 59% were female. The median illness onset date was June 18, 2026 (range: May 1 July 5).

Right now, the state health department said they have no specific produce grower, supplier or type of produce that has been identified as the source of the outbreak.

"Every summer, we see cyclospora disease, but we dont see as many cases as we are seeing this year. But usually theres contaminated produce," said Dr. Teena Chopra with Wayne State University.

Chopra is a professor of infectious disease at the university. She says tracking down the source of cyclosporiasis can be challenging because of its incubation period.

"Usually after infection, it can take anywhere from one to two weeks for the symptoms to be seen and by that time, the patient forgets what they ate," Chopra said.

She says the single-cell organism exists in the environment and can contaminate food at any time during harvesting or growing or poor sanitation during agricultural methods.

"The one thing about this organism is theres no human-to-human transmission, which is a good thing to know but at the same time, we are seeing a lot of cases," Chopra added.

Because of the uncertainty, the MDHHS is recommending extra caution with fresh produce. They recommend that entities in Michigan who are preparing, processing or serving raw produce take these steps:

Lettuce/leafy greens: buy whole heads of lettuce (rather than prewashed, bagged lettuce or salad mixes), throw away the outer 23 layers of leaves and wash the inner leaves under running water. For leafy greens that can be cooked, cooking is the safest option. Cilantro, basil: Wash thoroughly under running water, separating the leaves. Safest when cooked. Green onions: Trim the root end and remove the outer layer, wash thoroughly under running water. Safest when cooked. Raspberries: Their bumpy surface makes them especially hard to clean; the parasite can hide in the tiny crevices. Safest when cooked (pies, jams etc.). Consider frozen raspberries as an alternative (freezing may reduce but does not guarantee elimination of the parasite). Snow peas: Wash under running water and rub the surface. Safest when cooked.

Last Wednesday, 7 News Detroit checked back in with Monroe County resident Lindsay King, who had been battling the food-borne illness for weeks.

"The first couple of days, I had a fever and the cold chills and I had originally thought it was the flu and then the other symptoms set in," King said. "Im actually doing really great today. Im on my last day of antibiotics."

"There are food service deliveries and is this something that has been spread out from them or is it something that were picking up at the grocery store? What is the source? Its scary when you dont know," King said.

If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms, contact a physician, get tested and report it to MDHHS.

According to a news release from the Canadian Government, the Gordie Howe International Bridge will open for business on July 27.

The release says that Canada and Michigan have agreed to open the bridge then, with the support of the United States Government. The bridge was set for a ribbon-cutting in June, but it was later delayed when Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority Interim CEO Chuck Andary said in a statement that "Canada and the United States have agreed to delay the opening of the bridge, taking the necessary time to resolve any outstanding issues."

Glenn Stevens Jr., executive director of MichAuto at the Detroit Regional Chamber, explained the new bridge has state-of-the-art security systems and an exit/entryway that leads directly to I-75, which will help when it comes to shipping supplies across the border.

This new bridge is a six-lane bridge. The current bridge is a four-lane bridge," Stevens said.

 

Because of that new infrastructure, Stevens expects the bridge to speed up manufacturing and reduce delays for Detroit automakers.

 

For the auto industry, which operates J.I.T., Just In Time delivery, everything moves very quickly in a complex supply chain, so this is definitely something that helps that out," he added.

 

Detroit police say officers safely recovered a 7-month-old baby following a carjacking on the city's east side on Friday afternoon.

Police say the carjacking happened around noon near Glenwood and Chalmers streets.

Police say the baby was in the Cadillac SUV with his father when a man pulled the father out and took off with the baby still in the back seat. The baby was found safe about an hour later in a garage at an abandoned home on Redmond Street near Edmore Drive. That's about a mile away from the carjacking.

The baby is expected to be OK.

Safely, unharmed. He has been taken down to Childrens Hospital, examined and he has been reunited with his family," Director of Media Relations with the Detroit Police Department Jasmin Barmore said.

The stolen vehicle was towed from the scene.

We're told a suspect is not yet in custody in relation to the carjacking and DPD cannot confirm if a weapon was involved.

But for that parent, can you imagine the emotion they had in that moment," said Shane Haywood, who lives in the area. "And I pray to God you'll be able to heal from it and still be able to go outside and have fun with your child in the car."

Mayor Mary Sheffield provided a statement on the incident:

"A Detroit family that endured the horror of being separated from their 7-month-old baby for a few hours today after the father was carjacked must still be in shock, but relieved and grateful tonight thanks to the great work of police to recover their child unharmed. "Senseless crimes like this are completely unacceptable in our city and will never be tolerated. I know that DPD officers will not rest until the suspect is found and held accountable for his horrible actions."

Police are continuing to investigate this incident.

Dozens of cats rescued from a deplorable home in Redford Township are finally getting the care they desperately need.

The multi-agency rescue effort started two weeks ago.

Michigan Humane is treating 37 cats from the property on Gaylord Street near 8 Mile Road, including two kittens born just after the rescue.

They are each receiving specialized medical treatment and vaccinations.

Animal control continues to monitor the property daily to catch any remaining cats.

Michigan Humane is asking local rescue groups to help find homes for the animals.

"Typically, feral cats are more aggressive and more panic-stricken when they see people. This does not seem to necessarily be the case. We are also providing some medications and some decompression time to allow them to settle in and hopefully start to interact more with us," Dr. Crystal Sapp with Michigan Humane said.

Oakland County deputies are searching for a suspect who took off on foot during a pursuit Thursday night, the sheriffs office said.

The pursuit started in Green Oak Township then traveled through Lyon Township, Milford, Highland Township and ended in Rose Township, where the suspect fled on foot.

Multiple law enforcement agencies including K-9 units, drone teams and the sheriffs offices search and rescue team continued to search in Rose Township near Rose Center Road and Hickory Ridge Drive late Thursday night.

We're told at least two police vehicles were hit during the chase.

Deputies say there is no known danger to the public, but theyre asking residents in the area to remain vigilant and secure their homes and cars.

Anyone who sees anything suspicious should call 911 immediately.

The Full Circle Foundation, a Grosse Pointe Park-based nonprofit, says dozens of chickens, geese and vegetables were stolen over the Fourth of July weekend.

The nonprofit uses the garden and a partnering 4-H chicken coop to teach young adults with special needs life skills, job skills and social experiences.

They said the thieves hit both the foundation's edible garden and the Ribbions Club 4-H partners' chicken coop not once, but twice over the holiday weekend.

According to Ribbion Farms 4-H Club, 22 out of 26 chickens were missing, along with two geese. Volunteers also believed thieves took a hen that had just laid fresh eggs. They believed the thieves climbed over a fence and peeled back the enclosure to the coop.

A police report was filed with Detroit police.

On Wednesday, the Full Circle Foundation told us the chickens were dumped in a lot about a mile away. They worked to corral the flock Wednesday evening.

A contracted custodian was shot and killed outside a Detroit elementary school Thursday evening.

The shooting happened around 5:15 p.m. in the parking lot of Chrysler Elementary School.

Police say three men got into an argument and that escalated into a physical fight. A suspect then shot the victim.

According to Detroit Public Schools Community District, the victim was a contracted custodian with the district. No students or staff were on the school campus, the district said.

Police say the suspect is a CPL holder. The suspect was taken into custody and a weapon was recovered.

A statement from Detroit public schools is below:

Earlier this evening a shooting occurred on the Chrysler Elementary parking lot. The police responded and a contracted custodian from the school was fatally wounded. There were no students or staff in the building. Summer school had already been dismissed and children were not on campus. The District is cooperating fully with police throughout this active investigation. Our thoughts and prayers go to the contracted employees family.

Detroit Police Department's homicide unit is investigating.

Southgate police say an officer shot and killed a man in the parking lot of a Meijer on Saturday afternoon after he allegedly pulled out a sharp instrument and tried to engage police.

According to Southgate police, officers were called to the Meijer on Fort Street for a shoplifting in progress and confronted two suspects. Thats when, police say, one of the suspects went after the officers with a sharp instrument.

One officer fired at least one round, striking the suspect, police say.

Police say the man was transported to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries. The female suspect was taken into custody.

Michigan State Police is now handling the investigation.

Police say the officer involved in the shooting was placed on administrative leave until the investigation concludes.

Detroit police say an officer-involved shooting is under investigation on the city's west side.

It happened in the 18900 block of Rosemont, near 7 Mile and the Southfield Freeway. Police say that at around 6:30 p.m., officers were serving a search warrant on a home where an assault suspect was.

When the officers made entry, police say the suspect opened fire. Police say the officers returned fire, killing the suspect. No officers were injured, and police are not releasing any information on the officers involved at this time.

Police are also not releasing any more information about the suspect. They do say he was the only person inside the home at the time of the incident.

Body camera video is being reviewed as part of the investigation, which remains ongoing.

Livonia police have identified the people who were shot and killed at a home on Thursday night, saying three were family members and the fourth was in a relationship with one of the victims.

On Friday, the suspect was identified as 25-year-old Gage Wade Pierce. He's charged with four counts of first-degree murder and four counts of Felony Firearm. He was arraigned on those charges Friday morning and remanded to jail.

According to police, two victims were found inside a bedroom of the home with gunshot wounds. They were identified as Tanner Ray Pierce, 22, and Nevaeh May Jaslynn Finch, 21. Tanner Pierce is the suspect's brother, and police say Finch was in a relationship with Tanner.

Police officers then found two people in the backyard of the house, Sterling Ray Pierce, 58, and Holly Marie Kimball, 53, the mother and father of the suspect.

First responders tried saving the victims, but they were pronounced dead at the scene.

According to police, a semi-automatic rifle was found at the scene and is believed to have been used in the shooting. There were other weapons inside the home, believed to belong to the father and the suspect.

Police also said that they have not been at the home before, despite social media rumors. A few years ago, there was a shooting at a nearby house, but not at the home where it took place on Tuesday.

They also said there was a contentious relationship between the suspect and his parents, but they don't know what led up to the shooting. The suspect was not in any systems that Livonia polices mental health clinician could find, police said.

Neighbors say they heard 15 to 20 gunshots. Neighbors offered a helping hand to devastated family members at the scene.

"Nobody ever likes to admit that it happens in your neighborhood. You always like to feel safe and sound inside your own four walls until it's four walls down," said Dean Shultz, who lives nearby. "It's heartbreaking for everybody involved."

Two men are dead after being shot in the early morning hours of Sunday, in what police say were separate incidents.

Both shootings took place in between 1:30 a.m. and 3 a.m. We're told that one shooting happened in the 19000 block of Kelly Road on Detroit's east side around 1:30 a.m., and the other happened in the 8700 block of Quincy Street on Detroit's west side about 90 minutes later.

Authorities say that the circumstances that led up to each of these shootings are unknown. No suspects have been arrested in relation to these cases.
