In The Groove: Fran Lebowitz talks Motown, Dolly Parton ahead of Fisher Theatre talk

In a cultural landscape crowded with pundits and talking heads, Fran Lebowitz remains one of the sharpest and most original social commentators around today.

She’ll bring that wit and insight for a talk and Q&A with the audience at the Fisher Theatre on Wednesday, October 22.

Ahead of her visit to Detroit, she stopped by In The Groove to chat about all things music—from her love of Motown and its staying power with a younger generation, to the beloved Dolly Parton and her time helping the punk icons New York Dolls get one of their first shows.

To hear the full conversation with Ryan Patrick Hooper, click the audio player above. Tickets and details about the show are available via Broadway in Detroit.

The Metro: Sounds Like Detroit artist Beth

It’s hard to find a more home-grown Detroit artist than Beth. You can tell the second she lays her silky-sultry vocals on the track that the singer-songwriter is a direct descendent of the Motown sound.

From touring around the world as a backup vocalist for legendary artists KEM and Anita Baker, to her time in the music competition show The Voice, it’s clear that Beth’s sound is widely sought after.

Today, Beth joined The Metro and shed light on her experiences navigating the entertainment industry.
