Dingell joins Sanders, Jayapal to introduce Medicare for All Act of 2025

Bernie Sanders is once again asking for something literally every other industrialized nation in the world has except for the United States — universal health care. The U.S. Senator was joined on Tuesday by Michigan’s U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell and U.S. Rep. Pramila Jayapal of Washington to introduce the Medicare for All Act of 2025. “Every American has the right to health care, period,” Dingell said in a statement.

If it can happen to Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, it can happen to you

Every one of us should be outraged by the case of Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, a 29-year-old Maryland resident, construction worker, and father of three who was deported to El Salvador and sent to a maximum security prison in what the Trump administration admitted was “administrative error.” Instead of correcting the mistake, however, President Donald Trump and his Republican allies are now doubling down and trying to alter reality — and some Democrats seem all too eager to help them by looking the other way. But we should all be concerned about a wannabe U.S. dictator arbitrarily disappearing someone without due process to an unaccountable foreign black site.

Abdul El-Sayed joins race for Michigan’s U.S. Senate seat with Bernie Sanders endorsement

Abdul El-Sayed — a former Wayne County public health official who came in second place against Gretchen Whitmer in the 2018 Michigan gubernatorial primary — is returning to politics. On Thursday, El-Sayed announced his candidacy for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Democrat Gary Peters in 2026, earning the endorsement of U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders.

If you were in the room with Trump, what would you do?

It’s safe to say that Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s recent overture to President Donald Trump didn’t go exactly as planned. Last week, Big Gretch was in Washington, D.C. to bend the ear of Trump — her second such visit in two months. But whatever Whitmer hoped to accomplish, a viral photo showing her hiding from cameras as she found herself in an awkward situation in the Oval Office probably wasn’t part of it.

Six tribes withdraw from federal talks over Line 5 tunnel permit

This coverage is made possible through a partnership between IPR and Grist, a nonprofit environmental media organization. In a rare move, six tribal nations in Michigan have withdrawn from discussions on a federal permit for the Line 5 tunnel, which the Canadian company Enbridge wants to build under the Straits of Mackinac. Line 5 carries oil and natural gas liquids across the Straits of Mackinac.

Is it that hard to say transgender people deserve dignity and respect?

President Donald Trump’s joint address to Congress on Tuesday night was a fascist speech. He spent much of the record-setting address — at one hour and 40 minutes, the longest ever delivered to Congress — sneering at and denigrating Democrats, spouting a firehose blast of falsehoods, threatening to annex allied nations like Greenland “one way or another,” calling for the death penalty to anyone who kills a cop, promising to round up “illegal” immigrants, and continuing to roll out the red carpet for his oligarch friend Elon Musk to take over the U.S. government. But much of the address was also centered on the ongoing moral panic against transgender people — statements that were reportedly not included in excerpts shared with the press ahead of time.

Bernie Sanders is bringing his ‘Fighting Oligarchy’ tour to Detroit

While the Democratic Party seems to be at a loss as to how to respond to President Donald Trump and his billionaire buddy Elon Musk’s rapid (and possibly unconstitutional) dismantling of the federal government, U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders is calling it like he sees it. The Vermont independent has hit the road for a national “Fighting Oligarchy: Where We Go From Here” tour, rallying against what his office calls “the takeover of the national government by billionaires and large corporations, and the country’s move toward authoritarianism.”

Upcoming HGTV series ‘Condemned’ to revitalize Detroit’s abandoned homes

HGTV, everyone’s favorite reality TV guilty pleasure, is coming back to Detroit. The network announced Thursday that it has green-lighted Condemned, a new home improvement show set in the Motor City. “During the eight one-hour episodes, property investor and rehabber Kristyn Patterson and her builder father, Pancho Patterson, will stop at nothing to rescue The Motor City’s worst houses that are destined for the wrecking ball,” HGTV says in a press release.

Detroit rapper files lawsuit against Lyft for weight discrimination

A Michigan civil rights law firm filed a lawsuit against Lyft after one of its drivers refused to give a ride to a Detroit woman because of her weight. According to the complaint from Marko Law, PLLC, on Jan. 18 Dajua Blanding — a self-described “BBW” rapper who also goes by the name Dank Demoss — called a Lyft for a ride from her home to watch a football game at her cousin’s house.
