New Zealand actor Sam Neill, known for 'Jurassic Park' and 'The Piano,' dies at 78, his family says

Sam Neill, a smoothly elegant and versatile actor whose career moved from art film to blockbuster as he dodged velociraptors in Jurassic Park and played Holly Hunters husband in The Piano, has died. He was 78.

In 2023, Neill disclosed he had been diagnosed with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Neill died on Monday in Sydney, according to a statement posted to the actors social media page.

His death was sudden and unexpected, the statement said, adding that he remained cancer free when he died. A cause of death wasnt specified.

Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life, his family wrote.

Actor came to world's notice with Dead Calm and My Brilliant Career

Neill was one of a host of actors and directors who achieved international fame after an explosion of Australian films that began in the late 1970s, a list that includes Paul Hogan, Mel Gibson, Geoffrey Rush, Russell Crowe, Jane Campion, Peter Weir and Gillian Armstrong. His range was remarkable, playing opposite Helena Bonham Carter in the Alan Ayckbourn comedy Sweet Revenge to chopping off Hunters finger in The Piano to poking his own eyes out in the sci-fi horror Event Horizon.

In Omen III: The Final Conflict, he played Damien the Antichrist and he also played Cardinal Thomas Wolsey in The Tudors.

The actor first came to the attention of international audiences in Armstrongs 1979 film My Brilliant Career, which also introduced Judy Davis. He later appeared in Phillip Noyces Dead Calm, a classy thriller set at sea and co-starring the then-relatively unknown Nicole Kidman.

Neill twice co-starred with Meryl Streep, in Australian director Fred Schepisis Plenty and again for Schepisi in A Cry in the Dark, a film about the sensationalized aftermath of a dingo killing a baby in the Australian Outback. He earned an Emmy nomination for his performance in the title role of the 1998 miniseries Merlin and another as narrator of 2017s Wild New Zealand.

Jurassic Park was his best-known film

Perhaps Neill achieved his highest level of fame in Jurassic Park playing paleontologist Alan Grant, who is summoned to an island off Costa Rica where a theme park has been built to house herds of cloned dinosaurs. He co-starred alongside Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum and Richard Attenborough.

His character was thoughtful and reasonable, a scientist who warned the mastermind of the theme park before the chaos: Dinosaurs and man, two species separated by 65 million years of evolution have just been suddenly thrown back into the mix together. How can we possibly have the slightest idea what to expect?

Grant survived the harrowing events when the creatures get loose, but didnt return for The Lost World: Jurassic Park II in 1997. He came back for the third episode in 2001 and Jurassic World: Dominion in 2022.

Its probably a little late to learn these things, he told the Daily New of New York in 2001, but I finally feel Ive worked out how to be an action hero. Im happier with Grant this time. Hes gnarly and grizzled, but he looks like he knows what hes doing.

Neill grew up in Northern Ireland, then New Zealand

Born in 1947 in Northern Ireland, Neill emigrated to New Zealand at the age of 7. He was born Nigel Neill, but told interviewers he started to go by Sam because there were too many Nigels at his school.

His family settled in Dunedin on the South Island and he was sent to boarding school in Christchurch. After college, he took the lead in Sleeping Dogs in 1977, the first feature made in New Zealand in more than a decade.

Neills other film roles included playing a Soviet submarine officer who memorably dreams of a home in Montana in The Hunt for Red October and an investigator in director John Carpenters In the Mouth of Madness.

On the small screen, Neill played the malign Chester Campbell in TVs Peaky Blinders and Thomas Jefferson in the four-hour CBS miniseries, Sally Hemings: an American Tragedy. On Apple TV+, he was on Invasion, playing Oklahoma Sheriff John Bell Tyson, a man late in his career searching for his purpose. In 2024 he starred opposite Annette Bening in the Peacock series Apples Never Fall.

Actor beloved in New Zealand as an unassuming celebrity

The actor became known in New Zealand as a modest and unassuming person who didn't embrace celebrity. On social media, he often posted images of his farm animals, many of them affectionately named after celebrities and friends, like Laura Dern the chicken, Kylie Minogue the duck and Helena Bonham Carter the cow.

New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon mourned Neill as one of the greats in a statement posted to social media.

He started out when there was barely a film industry to speak of, Luxon wrote. For more than fifty years he took New Zealand stories to the world and his talents helped make our film industry into what it is today.

Neill was also a vintner and under his Two Paddocks brand, he produced pinot noir and riesling wines from his winery in the Central Otago region of New Zealands South Island.

His memoir Did I Ever Tell You This? came out in March 2023 and he was awarded a knighthood in recognition of his outstanding contribution to film, a title approved by the late Queen Elizabeth II.

I cant pretend that the last year hasnt had its dark moments, Neill told The Guardian in 2023, referring to his cancer diagnosis and treatment. But those dark moments throw the light into sharp relief, you know, and have made me grateful for every day and immensely grateful for all my friends.

He is survived by his four children and eight grandchildren.

Zack Wheeler outduels Tarik Skubal as Phillies shut out Tigers, win last series before All Star Break

J.T. Realmuto hit a three-run double in the sixth inning and Zack Wheeler struck out 10 in six scoreless innings, helping the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Detroit Tigers 5-0 on Sunday to win their three-game series before the All-Star break.

Wheeler (10-1) allowed just two hits in his first start since he was critical of Major League Baseball's decision to exclude him from the Midsummer Classic following his previous outing.

Tarik Skubal (5-5) gave up two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out five in five-plus innings.

Tigers manager A.J. Hinch replaced the two-time Cy Young Award winner after Bryce Harper led off the sixth inning with an infield single and put Keider Montero on the mound. Realmuto later cleared the bases with a double and scored on Bryson Stott's single, pushing Philadelphia's lead to 5-0.

Kyle Schwarber hit a full-count, two-out RBI single off Skubal to break a scoreless tie in the third and scored Realmuto, who was hit by a pitch to start the inning.

Wheeler, meanwhile, didn't let Detroit generate much offense.

During the game, the Phillies announced Cristopher Snchez will start for the National League on Tuesday night in the All-Star Game in his home ballpark.

Tigers infielder Kevin McGonigle, a 21-year-old rookie, also earned a spot in the Midsummer Classic in Philadelphia and said he's looking forward to the experience near his hometown and the high school he attended before Detroit drafted in 2023.

Phillies manager Don Mattingly said before the game that he wasn't ready to announce the team's pitching plan after the break.

Tigers RHP Troy Melton (5-1, 1.82) is scheduled to start against the Los Angeles Angels on Friday night.

Carney says opening of Canada-US bridge may take 'a little longer'

A new Canadian-built bridge across the Detroit River that U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to block may take longer to open than anticipated, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Wednesday.

Look, everyone's working hard to make sure the bridge is open as soon as possible. There is no big drama. If it takes a little longer it will take a little bit longer, but this will benefit Canadians, Americans, business, tourists, residents for decades and decades to come, Carney said on his way into Parliament.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the Gordie Howe International Bridge, jointly owned by Canada and the U.S. state of Michigan, is set to take place on Friday, while the bridge itself may not open to traffic immediately.

Carney said Tuesday that the second bridge between Windsor and Detroit would be open at the end of the week.

Friday's ceremony will take place following a recent conversation between Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles, according to a person familiar with the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss private talks.

In February, Trump demanded that Canada turn over at least half the ownership of the bridge to the U.S. federal government and agree to other unspecified demands in one of his many salvos over cross-border trade issues.

The bridge, which connects Windsor, Ontario, and Detroit, would be a vital economic artery between Canada and the United States. It is named after the late Canadian hockey great who spent 25 seasons with the Detroit Red Wings.

The building project was negotiated by Rick Snyder, the former Republican governor of Michigan, and paid for by Canada to help ease congestion at the existing Ambassador Bridge and Detroit-Windsor tunnel. Work has been underway since 2018.

Trump threatened the bridge as the United States-Mexico-Canada trade agreement is up for review this year, and Trump has been taking a hard-line position before those talks, including by issuing new tariff threats.

Court throws out conviction of man accused of secondary role in Gov. Whitmer kidnap plot

DETROIT (AP) The Michigan Court of Appeals on Tuesday threw out the conviction of a man who was found guilty of a secondary role in a plot to kidnap Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in 2020.

Joe Morrison was convicted of providing material support for an act of terrorism and other charges. In a 3-0 ruling, the appeals court reversed the results on technical grounds, saying kidnapping is not an underlying violent felony that can support a conviction under Michigan's terrorism law.

Morrison, 32, has been in prison since 2022. He was given a minimum sentence of 10 years for three crimes, but the length was subsequently reduced to six years.

State Attorney General Dana Nessel, a Democrat, was livid about the appeals court decision, calling it completely and irredeemably nonsensical, outrageous and irresponsible," and promised to take the case to the Michigan Supreme Court.

Morrison, Pete Musico and Paul Bellar were not charged with having a direct role in the plot to kidnap Whitmer. But they were members of a paramilitary group that trained with Adam Fox, a key figure who is serving a 16-year prison sentence after being convicted of conspiracy in federal court.

Whitmer, a Democrat, was never physically harmed. Undercover FBI agents and informants were inside Foxs group for months, and the scheme was broken up with 14 arrests in October 2020.

Musico and Bellar were found guilty with Morrison at the same trial in Jackson County. Lawyers for that pair will seek to overturn their convictions in July before a different panel at the appeals court.

The overall investigation produced a mixed bag of results for state and federal prosecutors. Five of the 14 men were acquitted at trial, and now Morrison's conviction has been thrown out.

Rookie sensation Kevin McGonigle walks it off to lift Tigers past Mariners

Kevin McGonigle homered in the fourth inning and hit a two-run single off All-Star closer Andrs Muoz with two outs in the bottom of the ninth that gave the Detroit Tigers a 5-4 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Sunday.

Wenceel Prez tripled home two runs in the seventh to begin Detroit's comeback from a 4-1 deficit as the Tigers took two of three games in the series.

Muoz (3-4) struck out Spencer Torkelson to start the ninth, then walked Zach McKinstry and Prez. Both advanced on Matt Vierling's groundout before McGonigle lined a single off the glove of leaping second baseman Cole Young to give Detroit its fifth victory in six games.

Will Vest (2-4) pitched a scoreless inning for the win.

Seattle wasted a strong start from Luis Castillo, who left with a 3-1 lead after yielding three hits in 5 2/3 innings. The veteran right-hander's only blemish was McGonigle's fourth homer a 420-foot shot leading off the fourth that tied it at 1.

Colt Emerson doubled off Tigers starter Jack Flaherty to begin the third before scoring on Young's one-out single to put Seattle up 1-0.

Julio Rodrguez singled and scored on a double by Josh Naylor for a 2-1 lead in the sixth. Flaherty left after walking Randy Arozarena. The right-hander allowed three runs and six hits in five-plus innings.

Drew Sommers relieved Flaherty and hit Emerson with a bases-loaded pitch to make it 3-1. Kyle Finnegan entered and retired Jhonny Peralta on a lineout to center field to end the inning.

Rodrguez walked with one out in the seventh, stole second and third, and scored on Arozarenas two-out single off Finnegan for a 4-1 lead.

Mariners reliever Cooper Criswell gave up Prez's two-run triple in the bottom of the seventh and failed to get an out. Gabe Speier retired Vierling on a pinch-hit grounder to third, and McGonigle on a shallow fly to left before striking out Gleyber Torres to keep it 4-3.

Seattle had homered in nine straight games.

Tigers' Tarik Skubal works 5 scoreless innings in rehabilitation appearance

Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal pitched five scoreless innings Sunday in the two-time Cy Young Award winners first minor league rehabilitation appearance since undergoing elbow surgery last month.

Skubal struck out six and allowed two hits for Single-A West Michigan against Dayton. Forty-four of his 54 pitches were strikes.

The 29-year-old left-hander had a non-invasive procedure on May 6 to remove a loose body from his throwing elbow. Skubal last pitched for the Tigers on April 29.

Skubal is 3-2 with a 2.70 ERA in seven starts this season. He has struck out 45 and walked only six over 43 1/3 innings. Skubal has won the AL Cy Young Award each of the last two seasons.
