The Metro: Detroit’s cultural exports go beyond cars and techno—it’s the blueprint for free public museums

4 June 2026 at 20:30

The city of Detroit is connected to larger cultural movements throughout its history. Yet, most people don’t realize the first free national public art museum has its roots in Detroit.

Charles Lang Freer wasn’t born in the city, but moved here for opportunity and economic growth. He turned his Ferry street home into a living gallery, collecting thousands of American, Asian and Middle Eastern art works.

He arrived in Detroit in 1880, when the city was on the brink of a cultural boom. The Detroit Institute of Arts opened in 1885. Pewabic Pottery opened in 1903. The Scarab Club began in 1907. The College for Creative Studies traces its roots to 1906 as the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts.

Charles Lang Freer
Charles Lang Freer, patron of the arts.

Following the success of his railroad car business, Freer retired at the age of 47. He became a student of art, collecting, traveling and amassing an impressive collection. The collection went on to form the country’s first national museum and Asian art museum in Washington DC.

Dr. Chase F. Robinson is the director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Asian Art.  He and his team worked closely with the Freer House in Detroit to curate a new exhibition in honor of the nation’s 250th anniversary. He tells The Metro more about the history behind the Freer House.

A Museum in the Making will be on display June 27 through August 8 at the National Museum of Asian Art in the Freer Gallery of Art.

The Metro: A children’s art museum in Rosedale Park nurtures Detroit’s next generation of artists

3 June 2026 at 20:04

Over in the Rosedale Park neighborhood on Grand River is an art gallery for children. It’s a space where some of the city’s youngest artists can create and display their work.

The RED: Children’s Art Museum and Gallery nurtures and displays the work of kids who want to exercise their creative skills.

Yvette Rock is the founder and executive director of the gallery. She has been working with young artists for decades, encouraging them to develop their skills and exposing them to career artists right here in Detroit.

The museum re-opened in March in time for the summer season, so Rock joined the show to talk about the museum’s work and how she develops young artists.

The Metro: Local stage play highlights the legacy of baseball icon Roberto Clemente

2 June 2026 at 18:49

Roberto Clemente is a baseball icon. Over his 18-year career he won two world series, acquired 12 golden gloves, four batting titles, and is one of only 33 players in baseball history to collect 3,000 hits in his career. Clemente’s resume jumps off the page.

But what Clemente was able to accomplish on the field may not even be his greatest contribution. Clemente’s record as a civil rights advocate and humanitarian is as synonymous with his reputation as his athletic achievements.

Tragically, Clemente’s desire to help others led to his death in December 1972. On a trip to escort aid to Nicaragua after an earthquake hit the country, his plane crashed and he was never seen again.

To honor him in the years since the accident, the MLB gives the Roberto Clemente award to the player who demonstrates exceptional work off the field.

In an effort to further enshrine Clemente’s legacy, a new stage play tells his story.

“Roberto Clemente: A Diamond Within” is an original play written by Candido Tirado. The play is being  produced by Plowshares Theatre Company and it runs from June 12th through June 28th in the Marlene Boll Theatre at The Boll Family YMCA.

Gary Anderson, Producing Artistic Director of Plowshares Theatre Company, joined the show to explain why he’s bringing this take on Clemente’s life to a Detroit stage.

The Metro: Darryl DeAngelo Terrell’s art builds a world where Black gay life can thrive

21 May 2026 at 20:19

Liberation work doesn’t look one way. For multidisciplinary artist Darryl DeAngelo Terrell, it looks like photography, videography, and sound working in concert to create a world free of race and gender constructs.

Rooted in their lived experience growing up Black and gay in Detroit, Terrell’s work questions our conventional understanding of desire, beauty and home then forces those who experience the work to confront how limited our portraits of Blackness within those themes actually are.

Terrell joined the show to explain how their art, in all its forms, serves as a tool to realize a world free of those limitations. A dark photo of a house in front of trees. A smear of light brown lightly sparkles.

The Metro: Detroit Techno history and future on stage at Movement this weekend

20 May 2026 at 02:54

Since it’s founding in 2000, Movement has honored the raw, electrified spirit of the city where Techno was born. It’s a space where sound, struggle, and innovation come together, uniting people through electronic music.

It’s grown into a massive event at Hart Plaza that draws DJ’s and visitors from around the world. Despite it’s growing popularity and international appeal, the festival still puts local talent on stage, from legendary DJ’s like Kevin Saunderson and Stacey “Hotwaxx” Hale to newer artists like Tammy Lakkis and Kesswa.

To hear more about Movement this year, Tia Graham spoke with Sam Fotias, operations manager at Paxahau, the organization that produces the festival.

WDET is a proud media partner of the Movement Electronic Music Festival. We will have live DJ sets on In The Groove this week from 2 to 3 p.m. ET.

On Memorial Day, catch all three performances rebroadcast back to back from noon to 3 p.m.

Nonprofit provides mental health care resources for Bengali communities

19 May 2026 at 13:54

The Bengali Mental Health Movement launched online as an anonymous online platform in 2018 to address mental health in Bengali and Bangladeshi communities.

Michigan is home to a significantly large population of Bangladeshis.

Tazin Banu and Riya Ahmed work with the New York based nonprofit to expand mental health conversations in communities that struggle with stigma and cultural sensitivities.

Banu is the founder, and Ahmed is the co-founder of BMHM.

“When we started off, we were, you know, just a group of volunteers doing grassroots work, and then we realized we needed more sustainable infrastructure.”

Tazin Banu is the founder of Bengali Mental Health Movement.

The group created transliterated and translated documents during the pandemic.

“We want to take these mental health concepts and information and make it again accessible to our community,” Banu says.

One of their programs is Alaap, a therapeutic peer-led group, to create safe spaces to have discussions about mental health.

“We wanted to give individuals a safe space where they felt comfortable to at least communicate some parts of their journey,” Ahmed says.

Riya Ahmed is the co-founder of the Bengali Mental Health Movement, a nonprofit which aims to provide accessible resources to Bengali and Bangladeshi communities.

Alaap means conversations, referring to the need for more conversations around mental health.

The nonprofit has a wide reach, including a directory which has providers from all across the world.

“It was great to see that there are communities and professionals all over the place that, like, again, just like wanted to be a part of part of BMHM in some way,” Banu shares.

Ahmed says it’s a validating experience to be a part of this large network.

“When you do work like mental health, and in a community that might not be so encouraging to have these conversations or be on in the supporting field, it’s very validating when you see the encouragement from all over. Right, it’s really nice to see how far the reach is, and how much it might be helping individuals that might have not seen this in their own community,” Ahmed says.

The group hopes to expand services, resources and put out a community needs assessment.

They also hope to launch a self-care initiative called Joton: Aided and Embodied Self-Care Workshops soon. It’s a monthly free workshop to remove barriers to self care.

Ahmed says they also hope to expand language services to include younger and older generations.

“Language would help, when it comes to older generation, so that is the expansion. That would be wonderful to have that in Bangla,” she says.
