Watch the full story from Carli Petrus in the video player below Thousands rally in Clark Park in Southwest Detroit for No Kings protest

Detroit Police confirmed to us after the protest that no one was arrested at today's rally.

According to a press release from No Kings, these protests have been organized to reject authoritarianism, billionaire-first politics, and the militarization of the country's democracy. According to an Associated Press report, the "No Kings" protests are being organized by the 50501 Movement, which, according to its website, stands for "50 protests. 50 states. One movement."

A handful of protestors spoke on a stage at the park; you can watch the speeches in full, including a speech from Rep. Rashida Tlaib, in the video player below.

"All of these fascist, unconstitutional, unlawful decisions only can be fought when we resist in the streets," Rep. Tlaib said. "We did not get the civil rights act because someone in congress woke up that day and said 'geez, that's a really good idea.' It's when people protest, they march, they Boycotted. Many of them, some of them lost their lives because my Black neighbors deserve human dignity."

This isn't the only No Kings protest happening in metro Detroit today; protests are also happening in Dearborn, Livonia, Farmington Hills, Ferndale, Novi, Roseville, Ann Arbor, Belleville, Troy, Waterford, Wyandotte, Romeo, Saline, Brighton and Milan. Today's Day of Defiance is expected to be the largest single-day mobilization since Trump returned to office, according to organizers.

These protests are happening on the same day as a planned military parade in Washington D.C. to celebrate the Army's 250th anniversary. It is also Trump's 79th birthday and Flag Day.

Those who disagree with the protestors, like Michigan Sen. Jim Runestad (R), say that Democrats and the city of Detroit are making Trump's plan of action more difficult by refusing to follow orders.

"(Detroit is) officially not a sanctuary city, but they're doing everything they can to thwart ICE," Runestad told us earlier this week. "Again, we have 40 million people coming into this country illegally, competing with housing for the working class. So working class in your lifetime is probably not going to be able to afford a house," he said.

Three students were killed and five more were wounded when a gunman opened fire on MSU's campus in February of that year. The three students killed were all from metro Detroit: Grosse Pointe natives Brian Fraser and Arielle Anderson and Clawson native Alexandria Verner.

MSU has agreed to pay a total of $29.75 million to students Nathan Statly, Troy Forbush and Yukai "John" Huao, announced Gurel Mills and Grewal Law, the law firms representing the students. All three students suffered life-altering gunshot wounds, with Huao's injuries paralyzing him.

"These settlements bring closure to one chapter of these survivors healing journeys," the law firms said in a joint statement. "Grewal Law and Gruel Mills Nims & Pylman are honored to assist in obtaining justice for these remarkable young men."

When reached for comment about the settelements, MSU provided 7 News Detroit with the statement below:

Michigan State University understands the depth of the impact of the events of February 13 and extends our deepest condolences to those injured and to their families and loved ones. Our university community stands with them and continues to work with them as they heal and recover from the tragedy. While the university cannot comment on any specific settlements, we truly hope reaching a resolution helps provide some measure of relief, support and care to impacted individuals and their families.

After an interview request, the Statly family provided the following statement on Nathan's behalf:

We are extremely grateful MSU is helping Nate and the other injured students. We now have the peace of mind that his medical and caregiving needs due to his severe brain and physical injuries will be supported through his lifetime. We would trade everything for him to get his life and independence back and to never have experienced any of this. Since that is not possible, we will just keep going forward- his strength and his determination are our inspiration.I also wanted to say that we never sued the university or filed a lawsuit- we had to file the intent to sue. MSU chose to support these students without having to go to court. Thanks so much I am at physical and occupational therapy with Nate - hes trying so hard to get function back in his left arm and leg.

Chinese citizen arrested at DTW after allegedly smuggling biological materials related to roundworms, U-M lab

9 June 2025 at 17:37

A Chinese citizen has been arrested and charged after federal investigators say she smuggled biological materials into the U.S. for her work at a University of Michigan laboratory, and lied about it to investigators.

Watch video reports from Darren Cunningham and Ryan Marshall: Chinese citizen arrest after smuggling biological materials related to U-M lab Chinese citizen arrested at DTW after allegedly smuggling biological materials related to roundworms, U-M lab

Chengxuan Han is listed in the criminal complaint. Per that complaint, which you can read in full at the bottom of this article, Han sent four packages to the United States from Wuhan that contained biological material. The packages were addressed to individuals connected to a lab at U-M.

Han was arrested at Detroit Metro Airport on Sunday, with investigators saying she arrived on a J1 visa. She is being held in law enforcement custody. A detention hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.

The feds say that Han made false statements to Customs and Border Protection Officers before ultimately admitting to the FBI that she sent the packages, which contained biological material related to roundworms.

The Department of Justice found that the content on Han's phone had been deleted three days before arriving in the U.S.

It should be noted that a criminal complaint is not evidence of guilt. Han awaits a trial as investigators determine whether or not to seek a federal indictment. The FBI, CBP, and ICE HSI are investigating the case.

The alleged smuggling of biological materials by this alien from a science and technology university in Wuhan, Chinato be used at a University of Michigan laboratoryis part of an alarming pattern that threatens our security. The American taxpayer should not be underwriting a PRC-based smuggling operation at one of our crucial public institutions," said United States Attorney Jerome Gorgon Jr. in a statement.

This is the second time this month that a Chinese national connected to biological pathogens and a U-M laboratory has been arrested by the FBI. According to the U.S. Attorneys Office, 34-year-old Zunyong Liu and 33-year-old Yunqing Jian smuggled in a fungus called Fusarium graminearum whose toxins can cause vomiting, liver damage, and reproductive defects in humans and livestock.

It is unclear at this time whether these two cases are connected, and whether or not they are linked to the same U-M lab.

The workers are seeking an increased wage scale for Competency Evaluated Nurse Assistants (CENAs) and increased starting rates for Ciena workers in housekeeping, dietary, activities, cooking and maintenance. Other demands include shift differentials, annual raises for all workers, paid sick time, holidays and health insurance. The workers have been working without a contract for months, with some working without a contract since January of 2024.

We dedicate our time to caring for our residents, but Ciena makes us jump through hoops to care for ourselves," said CENA Tikesha Williams in a statement. "We dont have adequate supplies and we are constantly short staffed, which takes a huge toll on us. Being able to provide for my family for my granddaughter matters so much. We deserve to be treated with respect no matter what our job title is.

We also reached out to Ciena Healthcare for a statement. Here is that full statement, from CEO David Parker:

"Ciena Healthcare has received notice of impending 24 hour strikes to be held on May 20, 2025, by members of SEIU Healthcare of Michigan, at five nursing facilities managed by Ciena Healthcare and located in Southeast Michigan. Each of these collective bargaining agreements are separate and distinct agreements not linked to each other.First and foremost, our impacted facilities are making necessary preparations for and will provide care to all residents during any of these planned strikes by SEIU Healthcare of Michigan. A planned strike at this time by SEIU Healthcare of Michigan is unnecessary given that (i) none of the collective bargaining agreements are at an impasse, (ii) two facilities are in the early stages of bargaining, (iii) SEIU Healthcare of Michigan has not been in a hurry to reach new agreements until now (failing to provide dates to bargain and canceling scheduled sessions) and (iv) at each bargaining table, the employer has offered numerous contract enhancements including wage increases for each year of the contract and for years of seniority. Simply stated, the planned strike is diverting attention away from bargaining to resolve the few remaining open issues in each agreement and we look forward to working with the Union to obtain favorable contracts for our employees.Ciena Healthcare leadership appreciates the work done by all employees who are members of the collective bargaining units represented by SEIU Healthcare of Michigan and provide quality care to our residents on a daily basis."

SEIU Ciena workers sent us a statement in response to that statement, saying in part, "We are asking Ciena to come to the table with the intent to respect these workers and solve the drastic high turnover rate. Rather than offering solutions, Ciena has resorted to bullying and threatening workers, resulting in multiple Unfair Labor Practice complaints. They are violating federal labor law to silence these workers, who have waited too long for too little."

Watch our coverage from Sunday night and Monday morning Police investigate after man shoots ex-girlfriend & other man with AR-15 at home in Dearborn Heights Police investigate after man shoots ex-girlfriend & other man with AR-15 at home in Dearborn Heights

It happened near a home in the 4100 block of Weddell Street, between Outer Drive and Southfield.

Police tell us the suspect gained access to a home with an AR-15 style weapon. Investigators say the suspect shot his ex-girlfriend and a man she was with.

Pregnant woman & unborn child killed after being hit by drunk driver in Whiteford Twp., officials say

18 May 2025 at 13:43

A pregnant woman and her unborn child were killed after being hit by a drunk driver in Whiteford Township late Saturday night, according to officials.

We're told the crash happened on northbound US-23, north of Consear Road, around 10:00 p.m. last night.

Investigators say the woman, a 32-year-old Petersburg resident, was driving a Ford Escape and heading north when the car was side-swiped by the driver of a Chrysler 300.

Witnesses told police that the driver of that Chrysler 300, a 24-year-old Ohio man, was passing vehicles at a high rate of speed before merging into the right lane from the shoulder, trying to pass the Ford Escape on the left.

The impact of the side swipe caused the Ford Escape to roll over several times over an embankment before coming to rest on its right side. The woman was trapped inside the vehicle, and had to be pulled from the vehicle by Whiteford Township firefighters.

The woman was transported to a nearby hospital. She was seven months pregnant, and she and the unborn child were pronounced dead at the hospital.

After leaving the scene on foot, the Ohio man was found at a nearby gas station on US-23. He was arrested on two counts of Second-Degree Homicide and two counts of OWI causing death.

The man is scheduled to be arraigned in Monroe County 1st District Court later this week; prosecutors believe speed and alcohol were factors in the crash.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office is investigating this incident; anyone with more info can contact the Traffic Services Division at (734)240-7548 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SpeakUp.
