Former Piston Malik Beasley indicted on federal gambling charges, set to surrender to feds

29 June 2026 at 15:19

Malik Beasley, a former Detroit Piston, is set to be arrested on Wednesday in connection to his role in a gambling conspiracy, according to the Department of Justice.

Watch Mike Duffy's video report: Former Piston Malik Beasley indicted on federal gambling charges

Beasley was one of six men (former NBA player Edward Davis and co-conspirators William Brown, Robert Gorodetsky, Ernesto Plascencia and current NBA agent Paolo Zamorano) listed in the indictment unsealed on Monday. The men are charged with wire fraud conspiracy, bribery in sports contests, and money laundering conspiracy.

Watch our report from the Noon show below Former Piston Malik Beasley indicted on federal gambling charges, set to surrender to feds

Prosecutors accuse the men of bribing Beasley "to manipulate his performance in NBA games", using inside information to bet on prop bets associated with Beasley. They allege that Beasley agreed with Davis, a former teammate, to intentionally underperform and at times overperform in games, relative to one or more betting statistics. The games in question happened in the winter of 2024, back when Beasley was a member of the Milwaukee Bucks.

"As alleged, the defendants turned professional basketball into a criminal betting operation, bribing then-NBA player Malik Beasley to fix his performance in multiple games in order to place fraudulent wagers, enrich themselves and cheat legitimate sportsbooks, stated United States Attorney Nocella in a press release. Bribery and insider betting schemes like this one involving former NBA players and a current NBA player agent who exploited inside NBA information for profit erode the integrity of American sports and victimize the sports-watching public. Our Office will continue in its strong tradition of holding accountable anyone who seeks to corrupt sports through illegal means.

The indictment accuses Beasley of having accumulated gambling losses that totaled into the millions. Per the legal document, Beasley received bribes from co-conspirators, in the form of having his debts reduced or paid off. Davis and Beasley are accused of communicating about the scheme over Snapchat, with Davis telling Beasley that it's "Better to talk on there" and that "We can make some good money."

Beasley's attorney, Steve Haney, told 7 News Detroit that his legal team has coordinated Beasley's voluntary surrender to the government. Haney tells us that Beasley is set to arrive in New York for his arraignment on Wednesday, July 1. Haney told us that he looks forward to defending Beasley and noted that the indictment is not evidence, just a charging document.

Beasley was first accused of betting on NBA games last summer. The feds are accusing Beasley on gambling on NBA games and prop bets, which is strictly prohibited by league rules. The alleged gambling occurred during the 2023-24 season, before Beasley joined the Pistons.

Beasley was a key part of a Pistons team that won its first playoff games in nearly two decades in 2025, averaging 16.3 points and 2.6 rebounds per game while shooting 43 percent from the field, 41.6 percent from three on 9.3 attempts per game, and 67.9 percent from the free throw line. Considered one of the most prolific three-point shooters in the sport, Beasley was third in the NBA in three-pointers made last season and was a finalist for Sixth Man of the Year for the 2024-25 season.

Beasley, whose mother was born and raised in Detroit, is a free agent and hasn't appeared in an NBA game since these accusations came to light.

2.6 million Michiganders are expected to travel for Fourth of July

17 June 2026 at 10:26

More than 2.6 million Michiganders are expected to travel at least 50 miles during the Fourth of July travel period (Saturday, June 27-Sunday, July 5), according to American Automobile Association.

AAA said that the majority of those travelers over two million of them will be driving to their destination. Michigan's projected total travel for the holiday period is up 1 percent from last year.

That projection does set a record for Independence Travel in Michigan.

For many families, traveling for Independence Day isnt just a trip, its a tradition, said Debbie Haas, Vice President of Travel for AAA The Auto Club Group., in a press release Vacations are one category where consumers are still willing to spend, even if that means cutting back on something else. With an extended holiday travel period, we expect busy roads, steady demand for flights, and continued interest in cruises across many parts of the country.

Nationally, 72.2 million people are expected to travel at least 50 miles during the travel period.

It's too early to know what gas prices will be during the travel period due to recent volatility and the War in Iran, but as of Wednesday, July 17, Michigan drivers are paying an average of $4.15 per gallon, up 98 cents from this time last year.

For avoiding the most congested travel times, AAA recommends leaving before noon on most days if possible, including before 11 a.m. on Friday, July 3.

Watch Ryan Marshall's report from the noon show below 4 injured, 2 hospitalized in apartment fire on Detroit's west side

We're told that two people refused transport to the hospital, while two others were transported by emergency personnel.

The fire broke out on Monday morning around 7:30 at the building in the 4300 block of Cicotte Street. DFD got to the scene and rescued multiple residents using laddrers.

Of the two people hospitalized, one man suffered a leg injury jumping out of a third-story window, and the other man suffered smoke inhalation.

We're told that the building has 28 occupied units, and that the building owner is helping with the City of Detroit and the Red Cross to find temporary shelter for displaced residents.

"Me and my fianc were in our room with our son and my other four children and stepson were asleep, and we heard the alarm," said Tamika Jones. "But the girl next to us always burns things, so we thought that she was just burning something in the oven, and it continued, so James was like, 'I'm going to go and get up', he always goes and gets up and check to help her with what she's got going on, but this time it was not just a regular little burn, and I'm just glad that me and my family and everyone in my apartment made it out.

"I'm just glad we made it out, because we are on the third floor and it was on the second floor and we had to pass all that smoke," she continued, choking up. "We had to go down five flights of stairs with all that smoke, I had to close my eyes and just tell my babies to go."

"It was just like a movie, very scary, smoke, couldn't see, when we came out, the fire was above us cause we came out of the front door," said Willie Davis, who got his family out. "Once we hit outside I calmed down...that was a scene I won't forget."

As part of a new documentary about the Great Lakes, filmmakers captured the deepest part of Lake Superior, and will livestream their footage later this morning.

Very few people have dived to Superior Maximus, the deepest part of the lake. Very little is known about what exactly is down there, but phenomena has emerged surrounding the depths, such as the emaciated siscowet lake trout "zombie fish" that have been observed in these waters.

"Michigan Department of Natural Resources fisheries research biologist Shawn Sitar and the crew of the research vessel Lake Char will join filmmakers Yvonne Drebert and Zach Melnick to explore Superior Maximus as it has never been seen before using a cutting-edge ROV (remotely operated underwater vehicle) equipped with high-resolution cameras," the DNR told us in a press release.
